    ok, first time watching this series and i want some
     tips; it feels like this episode jumps into the deep end. It doesn't introduce characters or infill the story line, it just....starts? am i missing a series? my friends lent me this DVD box set. Should i bother watching it?

    Yeah, this is the third part of a three part ova series. If you just start watching this, you'll have missed a lot. You can watch the first two parts on youtube.

    This is Tenchi Muyo: OVA 3 Episode 1. It is NOT the first episode in the series (it is the 15th, excluding the Mihoshi special). Prior to this are OVAs 1 and 2, which are each technically 6 episodes, however each
     OVA is also followed by a special episode (episodes 7 and 14). OVA 3 is not an exception and includes a special 7th episode as well (episode 21). There is also the Mihoshi special (episode 13.5), which is fairly hard to come by (go torrents!).

    To correct some mostly correct but slightly wrong information in the other comments: This is the "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki" OVA. It is the third season of the "Tenchi Muyo!" OVA. The OVA series has 6 eps per season plus a special ep after some seasons. The first season of be OVA (6 eps) gave rise to a special ep (7) and the Mihoshi Special and season 2 (eps 8-13), which gave rise to other shows and timelines like
     Tenchi Universe. Now there are 3+ series, 3+ timelines, and 3 movies.

    If you see an something that just says "Tenchi Muyo", that could be referring to almost anything Tenchi-related, but probably refers to the first two
     OVA seasons. Note that the protagonist's name is Tenchi Masaki. Ryo-Ohki is another character whose name is used in the third OVA season. Other Tenchi series besides the OVA include Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Tenchi GXP, and a bunch of "Pretty Sammy" magical girl shows. The first 13 OVA e

    The series really isn't that hard to follow, just research the Masaki family tree, PAY ATTENTION TO WHO IS RELATED TO WHO, then rewatch the Japanese version w/ eng subs and put the pieces together. I will admit for those who grew up watching TOONAMI'S version of Tenchi Muyo, some of the translations and edits don't help
     you understand, but it is all there. Note: Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are only spin-offs of the OVA Tenchi Muyo. So dont get it mixed up ^^;;
