    Surely, but consider the needed current and voltage to drive a relay: eg a computer (or microcontroller etc) is not enough for that. That's why you need "more steps". Also relay is a bit dangerous, as its inductive spikes can harm stuffs, that's why the extra diode as well, but if you would connect a relay directly to a TTL level (if it's possible at all .. maybe the current would be too high for an average logic output line of
     some IC) it can cause even more problems. Well: as far as I know :)

    When a coil turns off the magnetic field collapses. This causes a reverse voltage spike which will damage the
     transistor. The diode doesn't conduct the voltage in the forward direction, but it conducts in reverse, back into the coil. The path back through the coil has less resistance than the transistor and it doesn't hurt the coil

    logical microchip use 5V+, and the out signal also is a 5V+ signal, so depending on the chip you will get a output
     signal of 5V+, let say a microcircuit control the temperature on a water tank, when temp raice over 60º the microcircuit send a signal of 5V+ to the gate of the mossfet and the 12V+ light turn on. The important thing here is that you can turn from 5V+ signal to a 12V+ signal (amplified signal).
