    Released in theaters; highly doubt that movie could air on television, given its content. And censorship laws in Japan have become more strict since Evangelion (some even saying that Evangelion caused said censorship laws to become more stringent), I can see that happening. Not to mention the
     complete tonal difference between the show and the new movies.
