    In NGE it's Toji, though in Rebuild he doesn't even become a pilot. Eva-04 disappears so instead Eva-03 is sent to Japan, though since there's already 3 units in Japan (Eva-00, Eva-01, Eva-02), Eva-02 is enclosed because no country can have more then 3 units. Asuka chooses to be the test pilot for the new Eva instead of Rei so that Rei can go to her dinner party which happens to be on the same day as the testing
     for Eva-03.

    Evas aren't really giants robots. imagine that little people (about the size of your nail) clone you, and turned your clone into a cyborg with a space in it's spine where they can control it's nervous system. then they use your robo-clone to kill other humans cause they can't kill us
     with their own weapons. That's an Eva, an Angel with metallic parts so they can be controlled.

    I'm aware she doesn't actually die but Shinji at least believes he has killed her she is even shown later in the film to still be alive when her entry plug is salvaged and Ritsuko comments that due to the possibility of mental contamination she
     cant be treated for her injuries.Indeed the trailer for the next film shows her to have seemingly recovered. I called this Asuka dies as that is what appears to have happened in this scene atleast.
